Ghana Research & Industry Collaborative (GRIC)

GRIC is a national collaborative that bridges the gap between researchers and industry stakeholders to drive collaboration and innovation. It comprises universities, research institutions, firms, government entities and international partners with an 11-member Steering Committee and three sub-committees focused on collaboration, capacity-building and fundraising.
Currently hosted by Impact Investing Ghana, GRIC aspires to become a leading collaborative to unlock untapped potential in Ghana’s research and innovation ecosystem to drive sustainable national development

2021–2022: Pilot Project Initiated
A pilot project was initiated, rallying 25 key institutions to explore structured engagements between research and industry in Ghana, laying the groundwork for GRIC.
2023: GRIC Officially Established
Hosted by Impact Investing Ghana and supported by the RISA Fund,the Ghana Research and Industry Collaborative (GRIC) was officially launched to bridge the gap between research and industry and drive innovation-led development.
2023: Partnerships & Structure Built
GRIC formed key partnerships with institutions such as MESTI, CSIR, Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Ghana Association of Banks, and others. An 11-member Steering Committee and 3 sub-committees (Collaboration, Capacity Building, Fundraising) were established.
2023: Learning Workshops
GRIC began delivering targeted learning workshops focused on research translation, commercialization, and stakeholder engagement—empowering researchers and institutions to better connect with industry.
November 2023: Maiden Annual Forum Held
The first GRIC Annual Forum brought together researchers, industry actors, and policymakers to co-create solutions, strengthen collaboration, and set the agenda for future research-industry engagement.
2023: Industry Brief Session and Friendly Format Template Designed
GRIC designed an industry-friendly format and template to guide the translation of research and create a structured platform for connecting researchers and industry stakeholders. This became the foundation for the sessions that followed.
July 2024: First Industry Brief Session
GRIC hosted its first Industry Brief Session using a design-thinking approach. These sessions created 90+ expressions of interest from businesses seeking to adopt research-based solutions.
January 2025: Strategic Convening Held
GRIC brought together key decision-makers for a policy dialogue to review progress, refine its action plan, and set strategic priorities for research-industry alignment. GRIC held a convening of intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer officers to discuss commercialization support to researchers and institutions, boosting innovation uptake and translation.
